First Timers' Guide

Welcome to the Flint School of Performing Arts! We’re excited that you’ve chosen to study with us. You probably have a few questions before you come to your first class, so we’ve tried to answer those that come up most frequently. If you have a question that isn’t covered here, go ahead and give us a call at 810-238-1350, ext. 3

Do I have to audition? No, the Flint School of Performing Arts has classes for all ability levels. Classes and lessons beyond the introductory level may require teacher approval or a placement evaluation. Please call the FSPA Office at 810-238-1350, ext 3, with any questions.

Is there an age requirement? All ages are welcome at the Flint School of Performing Arts, with age-specific curriculum beginning at two weeks old. Some classes may have specific age requirements, please call the FSPA Office at 810-238-1350, ext. 3, with any questions.

When do I pay? Payment is due prior to first class or lesson. The FSPA Office mails a postcard prior to each new term or semester reminding students that tuition and fees are due.

Where do I park? Free parking is available at the Flint Institute of Music. <include map>

What should I wear? Students should dress comfortably for their classes. Dance students should refer to the Dance Dress Code for appropriate class attire guidelines. Music ensemble participants may have specific attire requirements for performances, which will be communicated by the ensemble director. To review all FSPA policies, please visit our policies page

Who do I call with questions? Our friendly office staff are available to assist you by phone or when you stop by the FSPA. Call 810-238-1350, ext. 3

What do I do if I have to miss a lesson/class? Students are charged for all lessons and classes for which they register, including those missed through student absence.

Private lessons missed by the student will not be rescheduled. As a courtesy, students who must miss a lesson should notify the instructor as far in advance as possible. A message may be left with the FSPA Office at 810-238-1350, ext. 3, or by calling the instructor’s extension directly. Faculty extensions are listed in the online directory.

Music classes missed by the student will not be rescheduled. If a class is canceled due to instructor absence, a makeup class may be scheduled. There will be no refund for rescheduled classes missed by the student.

Dance classes missed under extenuating circumstances may be made up within the current term. Please see instructor for additional information.

Does the school close for bad weather? The school will not automatically close when the Flint Community Schools close. School closings may occur in the event of a snow emergency or other natural occurrence and will be announced on television, radio and on-line at thefim.org  

Can I get help with tuition cost? The Flint School of Performing Arts is dedicated to making arts education available to all. Tuition assistance is available through Seeing Stars! Interested students should apply by the application deadline prior to the Fall, Winter and Summer terms.
