Flint Youth Ballet is the advanced performance ensemble of the Dance Division. Performance opportunities abound with Flint Youth Ballet as the participate in the Seeing Stars! Benefit Recital, Showcase Concert, Festival of Dance and in the FIM production of The Nutcracker.
Students enrolled in the Intermediate Ballet II and III and Advanced Ballet I and II classes, as well as, dance students of the same level from other mid-Michigan dance schools, are encouraged to audition for FYB. Non-FSPA students are required to take one company class per week, as well as, two ballet technique classes, and one modern dance class per week with their current teacher.
As a member of FYB, dancers have many opportunities to participate in community engagement projects. Past partners have included the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, The Color Line Project, Urban Bush Woman and Creative Expressions Dance Studio. In addition to performing The Nutcracker with the Flint Symphony Orchestra, the FYB is privileged to have performed with the FSPA Jazz Ensemble, the Exclamation! Percussion Ensemble and the Flint Youth Symphony
The Balanchine Project is Flint Youth Ballet's discovery of the Balanchine aesthetic through the exploration of Russian Classical Ballet and American dance forms. Through a collaboration with the world renown Balanchine Trust, FSPA dancers participate in annual Master Classes with Balanchine artists. As a result of the Balanchine Project, FYB performed George Balanchine’s masterpiece Serenade in 2012, performed it again in 2013 with orchestra and in 2014 performed two movements of his Raymonda Variations.
Every four years FYB tours Austria with Young! Tanzsommer. The dancers perform, attend master classes and visit some of the most beautiful cities in the world including Innsbruck, St. Johann, Saltsburg, Lienz and Venice. FYB has toured with Young! Tanzsommer in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015.
