NEW! Music Composition and Songwriting

Have you ever wished you could write your own song?

Do you dream of composing for an orchestra, jazz trio or musical theatre?

Is there a special person, occasion or event that you’d like to honor with a unique creation?

The Flint School of Performing Arts is thrilled to announce the addition of two new faculty members who can help you take on these dreams! Help us welcome Dr. Bill Withem, music composition instructor, and Dan Mazur, songwriting instructor.

Music composition lessons are designed for individuals who already play music and/or sing and are interested in creating their own compositions. Students should know how to read music and have an understanding of music notation. It is helpful, though not necessary, for the student to have some experience with composition programs such as Finale, Sibelius or Pro Tools.

Songwriting lessons are for any individual who is interested in telling a story through music – no prior experience with music is required! Lessons will focus on creating lyrics and corresponding melodies. Songwriting is a wonderful way to celebrate a special event, life milestone or create a unique gift for someone special!

Students interested in studying either subject area may begin working with their instructor at any point in the year. Prior to the first lesson, the instructor will have a consultation with the student over the phone to determine the goals of the project and provide an estimated time period for completion.
