Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra

The Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra (FYSO) is made up of string, wind, brass, percussion, piano and harp players. Together this dynamic group rehearses and performs a variety of exciting music – from classical to pops. They rehearse on Tuesday evenings mid-September through April. Each season, the FYSO performs joint concerts with area high schools and a solo concert at The Whiting. In January 2015, they co-hosted and performed at the Mid-Michigan Band and Orchestra Day at The Whiting. On January 14th, 2016, the orchestra will present four “Meet the Orchestra!” Children’s Concerts, also at The Whiting.
Travel and exchange opportunities abound with the FYSO. The orchestra has developed relationships with the Limonest Youth Orchestra and Courbevoie Youth Orchestra (France), Great Island Fiddlers and Cork County Youth Orchestra (Ireland) and Gunma (Japan) Junior Philharmonic. Every other year, the group travels to one of those countries to perform with those orchestras and others. The FYSO toured Ireland in 2014 and toured France in Spring of 2016.

In years when it is not on the road, the FYSO frequently hosts foreign visitors. During the 2014-2015 season, they hosted musicians of both the Courbevoie Youth Orchestra and Limonest Conservatory. FYSO members have wonderful opportunities to work with the professional musicians in the Flint Symphony Orchestra. They receive coaching, observe and play at FSO rehearsals, attend FSO concerts and even have the chance to meet Maestro Enrique Diemecke! Want to join? Contact us!
