Dance Classes

The Dance Division is proud to include the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE ® National Training Curriculum, a breakthrough 9 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development. The ABT® National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels. PreBallet through Advanced Ballet will be taught by Slavka Jelinkova, Michael Means, Elizabeth Philippi, and Andrea Rocco who have successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Primary-Level 3 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum. Elementary Ballet IV though Advanced Ballet will be taught by Karen Mills Jennings who has successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Primary-Level 5 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.

Where better to make your dance dreams come alive than at the FSPA's Dance Division? For over 40 years, the Dance Division has offered students of all ages and abilities a variety of dance and performance opportunities. Classes range from Preschool Creative Dance (ages 4-6) to Modern Dance, Youth Ballet, Adult Ballet and Hip Hop.

Dance Division students levels Elementary Ballet II-Advanced II are encouraged to audition for the Flint Institute of Music's magical production of The Nutcracker with performances at The Whiting with the Flint Symphony Orchestra. Auditions take place in early September.

Headed by Karen Mills Jennings, the Dance Division offers more than 40 classes each week, we well as a regular performance schedule. Former students of the Dance Division are currently performing with the Sacramento Ballet, Karol Armitage, Menlowe Ballet, Island Moving Company and the Phantom of the Opera in Hamburg, Germany! Alumna are on the faculties of Clayton County Schools in Texas, Miami Valley Ballet Theatre, MamLuft&Co and the Flint School of Performing Arts.

The FSPA offers a full range of dance classes including classical ballet, modern dance technique and hip hop. Courses range from beginner levels to professional. Students are grouped by levels of progress in dance rather than grade level and will advance based on the student's progress.

Project Plié:

Project Plié is an initiative founded by AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE ® in 2013 to increase diversity in the art form of classical ballet. Karen Mills Jennings is an ABT Certified Teacher in Pre-Primary through Level 5 and is a Project Plié Partner Teacher. As a Project Plié Partner Teacher, Jennings is bringing the initiative to Flint, Michigan and the Flint School of Performing Arts. Jennings will be teaching in the ABT Project Plié Master Class Series at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Flint. Additionally, FSPA will offer an extended residency at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Flint with weekly classes, dancewear, and shoes for their members.
